Place links and disclosures in a way that builds trust
Understand when display ads make sense and how to test them
Welcome to Module 4. Affiliate links and display ads are the most common revenue layers for content assets, and they also apply to stores (partner products), domain landers (parking or referral links, used carefully) and tools (integrations and referral programs). This lesson covers how to add them without trading away the trust you built.
No guarantees: Commission rates, cookie durations, ad earnings and approval requirements vary widely by program, niche, audience location and season, and they change. Many sites earn little for a long time. Treat any numbers you model as scenarios, not forecasts.
Affiliate setup step by step
List what your audience already buys. Review your content plan and reader questions. What tools, products or services come up again and again?
Find programs. Check the brand’s website footer for “affiliates” or “partners,” large affiliate networks and marketplace programs. Note commission structure, cookie window, payout terms and restrictions.
Diversify. Aim for several programs across different merchants so one policy change does not wipe out your revenue.
Match link to intent. Place recommendations on compare and buy pages, and helpful contextual links in how-to guides. Do not force links into pages where they do not help.
Recommend honestly. Share pros, cons and who a product is not for. Readers trust balanced recommendations, and so do search engines.
Disclose clearly. Put a short disclosure near the top of pages with affiliate links and link to your full disclosure page. Follow the rules for your country (in the US, the FTC’s endorsement guidance) and each program’s terms.
Track clicks. Use a link management plugin or GA4 events to see which pages and placements get clicks.
